She's okay. She's okay. She has to be. She's gonna be okay, he just hit her. But what if she hit her head? I hit my head, but what if she hit hers harder? Oh my god. I hope she's okay. She's gonna be fine, Justin, she's gonna be fine.
"Justin? Are you alright?"
I glance up. Alyssa's standing in front of me, looking worried. I nod. "I'm fine. I just want her to be okay."
"Me too."
We're at the hospital, in the waiting room, waiting for the doctor to come out and tell us how Alexis is doing. After Ryan hit her, she passed out and we couldn't wake her up. Alyssa called 9-1-1, but they couldn't get her to wake up either. They didn't want to use the paddles because if it wasn't serious they might hurt her. I kept shaking her and yelling for her to wake up and open her eyes, but nothing was happening. It was the scariest moment of my life.
"I love her so much. What if he hit her too hard?"
"I don't think just hitting her could kill her or anything."
"What if it can?"
She doesn't say anything. She's as worried as I am. I wish someone was here besides us. The cops took Ryan, and my mom's not back from her business trip, and we couldn't get ahold of Alexis's sister Kate. So it's just Alyssa and me. She sits down beside me. She's been pacing back and forth this whole time, and I've been sitting here, close to tears. "She's gonna be okay," she says.
I just nod. I can't say anything. I keep thinking, what if she's gone? What if by some freak chance he hit her too hard or something happened and she's gone? I wish my brain would shut up so I wouldn't be so upset and I could get some sleep. We've been here for six or seven hours. Finally, I stand, angry. "This stupid hospital is so freaking slow!" I exclaim, really mad. I slam my fist into the wall, but not hard enough to break the wall or anything. We're the only ones in the waiting room, so it's not like anyone will see me or anything.
Alyssa stands and comes over to me. "It's alright, they're probabaly just really busy." She holds my hand, but I know it's just to comfort me.
"Whatever." I look around. "I'm hungry."
She nods. "Me too. There's a cafeteria down the hall. Do you want to go get something, and I'll wait for the doctor?"
I sigh. "Sure. What do you want?"
"Just an apple or something will be fine, thanks."
"Alright." She lets go of my hand and I grab my phone. "Call me if the doctor comes."
"I will."
I go down the hall and quickly find the cafeteria. There's not much to choose from to eat. I finally decide on a turkey sandwich and a soda for me and an apple, a bag of chips, and a bottle of water for Alyssa. I pay for the food and go back to the waiting room. "I didn't think an apple was enough, so I got you some chips and water too," I say, handing her the food.
She smiles weakly. "Thanks."
I take a bite of my sandwich; it tastes like rubber. Suddenly, I start thinking about earlier today, after me and Alexis did it, and I made her a peperoni sandwich, and ave her a hard time about eating weird food. I almost choke on my food and start crying a little bit. Oh my god, I can't start crying! I'm a guy. Guys don't cry, and I need to be strong now, so Alyssa won't get upset.
"Justin, are you crying?"
I hurry and wipe the tears. "No, I, uhm, I just got something in my eye." Smooth, real smooth.
"Well, alright, but it's okay for you to cry, you know."
"I don't need to cry. I'm fine."
"Whatever you say."
"I'm serious. I'm fine."
"I believe you."
I sit there and take a sip of my soda. She's right. I need to cry. But guys don't cry. They just don't. "Alyssa?"
"Yeah?"
"I'm so worried."
"I know."
"I miss her already."
"I know."
"I don't wanna lose her."
"I know."
"I love her. More than anything."
"I know."
I start crying. I'm willing the tears to go away, just stay in my eyes, don't fall. But it doesn't work. The tears slip silently down my cheeks. Alyssa puts her arm around me and rubs my arm.
"Shhh, it's gonna be okay," she says.
I wipe my eyes. I don't want anyone to see me crying. I take a shaky breath. "Alright. I'm okay. Thanks."
"No problem," she says, smiling.
I see the doctor walking towards us. "Alyssa, the doctor." We both sit up a little straighter.
"Hello, are you here for Alexis Allegriso?"
We both nod. "Yes, sir," I say. "We are."
"Well, I have some good news and some bad news."
"That means she's okay," Alyssa whispers in my ear.
"Yes?" I ask the doctor.
"The good news is, she's alright."
"Oh thank god," I breath. Alyssa lets out a sigh of relief. "Wait. What's the bad news?"
"Right. The bad news. When she fell, she hit her head, and she lost a lot of blood. She's going to have to take it easy for the next couple of days. So that means no being in crowded hallways, so take her to class after everyone else is in their classrooms, and no physical activity of any kind." He looked at me. Could he know? Doctors can't know that, can they? They only looked at her head, right? Oh well. It doesn't really matter.
"Does kissing count as physical activity?" I can't just not kiss her.
"You can kiss her, but not a lot. Only a little bit."
I nod. "Okay. Got it."
"Can we see her?" Alyssa asks.
The doctor nods. "Yes, but she's very tired, so don't stay for too long." He leaves.
We grab our stuff and go to Alexis's room. "Alexis?" I say quietly.
She smiles weakly. "Hey guys."
"How are you?" Alyssa sits down in a chair. I stay standing.
"I'm fine, just really tired, and my head hurts. Do I have a bruise right here?" She motions to the area around her cheek, below her right eye.
I lean over and look at it. "Only a little bit. It looks like it'll probably get worse though. Is that where Ryan hit you?" It makes me angry just saying his name.
She nods. "Yeah."
I clench my fists. "I'm gonna kill him."
"Justin-"
"He hit you. And you're in the hospital because of him. He's a horrible person and I'm gonna kill him."
"Justin Drew Bieber, if you kill him I am never speaking to you ever again."
"Why?"
"Because. I don't want to have to come visit you in jail." She smiles. "But, what happened to him?"
Alyssa speaks up. "The police took him. He's gonna be in jail for a couple days."
"I hope he never gets out of there," I say.
Alexis looks at me. "Justin, he didn't know what he was doing. Don't let it ruin your friendship."
"It's too late. He hurt the girl I love, and he can't take it back."
She raises her eyebrows. "The girl you love? Who would this be?"
"I think you know her. She's the most beautiful girl in the world, has a wonderful personality, is a great kisser, and her boyfriend loves her more than anything."
"She sounds like a very lucky girl."
"He's luckier." It's taking all my strength not to kiss her.
"She doesn't think so."
I can't take it. I lean over and kiss her gently. She kisses back, and she's kissing me more forcefully. I pull away, and she looks at me, confused. "I can't kiss you very much," I explain. "The doctor said."
She frowns. "Oh."
"Yeah."
Alyssa coughs. "So, uh, I'm gonna leave? Let you two have some privacy? That okay? Yeah? Okay. Though so. Bye!" She leaves.
Alexis laughs. "She is so dramatic!"
"I know." I laugh with her.
She sighs. "So..."
"I was so worried about you. I thought..."
"What? What did you think?"
"I thought maybe something might happen, and I might lose you."
"Oh, Justin."
I look down.
"Justin. You'll never lose me, baby." She smiles, and I can't help but smile back. "I love you," she says.
"I love you too."
"Justin!"
He is not talking to me. No way. Why would he think it's okay to talk to me after what he did?
"Justin! Wait up!"
I'm not even gonna bother replying to him.
"Justin!" He grabs my backpack, stopping me. "Dude, what's up with you?"
I spin around., "What's up with me? What's up with me?! I'll tell you what's up with me! You put my girlfriend in the hospital, that's what's up with me!"
Ryan looks at me, confused. "What are you talking about?"
"You hit Alexis! You hit her and she had to go to the hospital!" I'm up in his face, I'm so mad.
"I never did that!"
"Yes you did! You were drunk or high or whatever!"
A look of realization crosses his face, and he frowns. "Oh, crap..."
"Yeah, oh crap! Don't ever speak to me, or Alexis, or Alyssa ever again!" I turn to walk away, but he still follows me.
"Alyssa? What did I do to Alyssa?"
"Why don't you ask the police?"
"Dude, whatever I did, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt Alexis. I don't even know what I did."
"Too bad. Get away from me. You're disgusting." I leave him standing in the middle of the hallway, my former best friend.
I shove my books into my locker. I'm so angry. So Ryan isn't my friend anymore, whatever. I still have Christian, and I'll always have Alexis. Speaking of Alexis, I see her coming my way, and I smile. She makes my day 100% better every time I see her.
"Hey babe," I say, giving her a hug.
"Hey." She looks a little distant.
"Are you okay?"
"Me? Uhm, yeah, I'm fine." She's been out of the hospital for almost a week. Could her head still be hurting?
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I'm sure. I'm fine. But, uhm, we need to talk."
"Okay, well, can we talk later? We're going to be late for homeroom."
"Well it's kind of important.."
"It can wait though, right? I really can't afford to be late again." I start to walk away.
"My period's late."
I stop in my tracks. I slowly turn around. "What?"
"My period is late."
"But, but...what does that mean? It can't, you can't be..." I look in her eyes, she looks like she's about to cry.
"I'm pregnant."
